Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) publicly expressed confidence in Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Friday, amid growing questions about McConnell’s health and his extended absence from Congress. When asked if McConnell should provide more details about his condition, Ernst told journalist Nick Ballasy that a recent letter from McConnell’s physician and updates to his colleagues should be sufficient. “If the people of Kentucky want more, they’ll ask him for more,” she added.

Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) shared a similar sentiment, emphasizing respect for McConnell’s privacy and calling him “one of the toughest guys I’ve ever met.” Marshall noted he was unaware of McConnell’s health issues until meeting him in person but expressed confidence that McConnell will return to the Capitol.

These remarks come as scrutiny intensifies following McConnell’s hospitalization in June. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat and potential 2028 presidential contender, called on McConnell to directly address the people of Kentucky and prove his capacity to serve or resign. Beshear also stated on his SiriusXM podcast that the lack of information is “ruining” McConnell’s legacy.

Kentucky, known as the Bluegrass State, has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1992.
