Democratic strategist James Carville sharply criticized the Democratic Party's messaging ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, stating it is "not meeting the moment."

Speaking to MS Now’s Ari Melber on Friday, August 1st, Carville expressed disappointment with the focus of key races, which he said should center on pressing issues such as the affordability crisis and the ongoing war in Iran. Instead, he observed debates fixated on topics like Palestinian self-determination in Michigan and a proposed 17 percent tax on Harley-Davidson in Wisconsin.

"I have got to tell you I am not impressed by the response of a lot of people in the Democratic Party," Carville said. He lamented that Democrats were receiving "stupid talking points" about "a war that’s gone on for 5000 years and not likely to get solved between now and election day."

Carville, who served as a top adviser to former President Bill Clinton, encouraged those on the left considering a presidential run to do so. "My hope and my prayers, any Democrat out there thinking run for president, you have something to offer? For God’s sake run, run for office because we’re not getting … we got nothing but problems," he urged.

He also warned that the country’s state is "even more perilous than you even let it on to be."

Carville has been critical of the far-left factions within the party, recently labeling democratic socialists and progressive candidates as "insurgents." He claimed their strategy involves opposing both Republicans and establishment Democrats, calling them "part of the problem."
