Jemima Montag successfully defended her 10,000m race walk title at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow on August 1st. Montag, a two-time gold medallist, admitted to running a "selfish" race as she closely followed teammate Lizzy McMillen, who led for most of the 25-lap event.
McMillen, competing in her Commonwealth Games debut, took the brunt of the challenging Glasgow winds for approximately 23 laps. She said, "It was pretty windy out there so having to cop the wind for a good 23 laps was a bit tough, certainly not my plan, but I'm proud of my efforts and I went as hard as I possibly could."
Despite the presence of teammates on the track, Montag emphasized the individual nature of the sport, stating, "Not in a race. In training, absolutely, but in a race you have to be selfish. Unfortunately it's an individual sport, not a team."
Montag also expressed respect for silver medallist McMillen and bronze medallist Bec Henderson but noted, "there were no friends out on the track."
Henderson mentioned that the goal was to achieve an Australian 1-2-3 finish, though each athlete executed their own race plan. This approach mirrored a similar dynamic in the men's race walk, where gold medallist Isaac Beacroft noted that silver medallist Stephen Kihu encouraged him to share pacing duties.
Montag reflected on the race tactics: "I did look back a few times thinking 'Are you gonna kinda help out here?', but no, I was the rabbit today, so what are you going to do?" She acknowledged that if the event involved cycling or drafting with lead changes, the strategy might have been different.
The race highlighted the competitive spirit among Australian race walkers, culminating in a podium sweep at the Commonwealth Games.
