Maryland Governor Wes Moore expressed being “very concerned” that President Donald Trump might use federal government power to interfere with the 2026 midterm elections this fall. Moore cited Trump's efforts to restrict voting by mail, obtain voter information from states, and potentially deploy federal troops or agents to polling places as examples of such interference.

Moore made these remarks in an interview coinciding with his assumption of the chairmanship of the bipartisan National Governors Association (NGA), a role previously held by Bill Clinton when he was governor of Arkansas. Moore emphasized the NGA's role in ensuring states can oversee elections as designed by the U.S.

“I don't think that the president is trying to hide the ball on this,” Moore said. “It's not even am I concerned about what the president could do? I'm concerned about what he's already doing in broad daylight.”

In addition to his political concerns, Moore announced the launch of the “Service United” campaign, which opens with $10 million in philanthropic support. This initiative builds on similar work Moore has done in Maryland, including a $5 million expansion of an apprenticeship program announced recently. Bechara Choucair, executive vice president and chief health officer at Kaiser Permanente, highlighted the campaign's opportunity to provide career paths through a youth mental health corps.

Dame Louise Richardson, president of the Andrew Carnegie Foundation, which supports the program, expressed hope for a future where people are asked not only about their college education but also about their service year.

Moore, who is frequently speculated to be a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender, ruled out a presidential run at this time, stating he will not “get distracted” before the November elections. When asked about Trump, Moore acknowledged his positive experiences working with governors from both parties but noted, “the president of the United States seems to consistently take an ideological view when it comes to securing the future of this country.”
