However, hours later, Mullin posted on X (formerly Twitter) a firm message: "NO amnesty for illegal aliens. If you are illegally present in the United States of America—you will be detained and deported. Period."

This apparent contrast between his speech and social media statements drew backlash from conservatives. One user questioned, "Why were you at the National Governors Association Summer Meeting today saying the exact opposite of what you are posting now?" Another asked, "Did you suddenly radically change your mind about America's immigration policy in the past couple of hours? Or are you a liar?"

Former Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino accused Mullin of undermining mass deportations after the DHS secretary called for immigration reform. Critics argued that voters have made a clear demand for mass deportations with "no ambiguity."

Mullin's speech and posts highlight ongoing tensions within conservative circles regarding immigration policy and enforcement approaches.
