Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist, stated on Sunday, August 2, 2026, that the current U.S. federal minimum wage of $7.25 is what she considers radical. Hong made the remarks during an interview with NewsNation’s Chris Stirewalt on “The Hill Sunday,” responding to Republican candidate Rep. Tom Tiffany’s possible characterization of her as “a radical trans activist.”

Hong countered by saying, “What is radical is the fact that folks all across Wisconsin, many don’t have access to health care right now.” She emphasized the need for the state to ensure that people have what they need when they need it, reflecting priorities expressed by many Wisconsinites.

A recent Marquette University Law School poll released last week showed Hong leading the Democratic primary field with 38 percent support. Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes placed second with 16 percent, followed by Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley at 7 percent.

Hong is among several progressive candidates, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who have gained attention for their democratic socialist platforms.
