Nicolas Maduro, the former Venezuelan president currently imprisoned in New York, has welcomed “any path to dialogue” aimed at consolidating peace, coexistence, and reconciliation among Venezuelans. This statement was posted on Maduro's official Telegram account on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026, ahead of a US-backed meeting scheduled for the coming week between representatives of Venezuela’s interim government and opposition leaders.

Maduro, a leftist leader criticized for overseeing the collapse of Venezuela’s oil-rich economy, was captured in a US military operation in January 2026 and is now facing trial on drug trafficking charges in New York. Despite his imprisonment, Maduro claimed victory in the 2024 presidential elections and a mandate for a third term, although the US-backed opposition released voting tally sheets indicating their candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, had won by a landslide.

In a related development, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic have agreed to work towards restoring diplomatic relations that were severed two years ago after the Dominican Republic joined international complaints regarding the legitimacy of Maduro’s re-election. The Venezuelan foreign ministry announced that both countries have agreed on a roadmap for talks aimed at the gradual normalization of their diplomatic ties.
