Marcy Kaptur, the Democratic representative for Ohio’s 9th District, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after a hit-and-run car crash on the morning of Sunday, August 2nd, 2026, according to statements from the Toledo Police Department and her congressional office.

Kaptur, 80, was a passenger in a vehicle on her way to a church service when the car she was traveling in was struck. Ben Kamens, a spokesperson for Kaptur, said, "She is active, alert, and being treated for non-life threatening injuries."

Mohamad Nasser, a spokesperson for the Toledo Police Department, confirmed that two people were transported to the hospital following the "hit-skip crash" and noted that a police investigation is ongoing.

Kaptur is one of the longest-serving members of Congress, having first won election to her seat in Ohio’s 9th District in 1982 and being sworn in the following year. Her district, which President Donald Trump won in both 2020 and 2024, is a frequent target for Republicans. She narrowly won re-election in 2024 by less than one percentage point and is currently running for another term.

Following news of the crash, members of Congress from both parties expressed their support. Ohio Republican Dave Taylor tweeted, "My thoughts are with @RepMarcyKaptur after hearing the news of this morning’s car crash in Toledo."
