Andrew Truelove, 41, was ordered held at Rikers Island without bail on Wednesday, August 2nd, 2026, after violating the terms of his probation, according to court records.

Truelove is accused of sneaking into a vestibule near Studio 1A at NBC's Rockefeller Center on July 16th, 2026, during a live broadcast of the "Today" show. He allegedly approached co-host Craig Melvin and hurled a racial slur. Authorities initially stated that Truelove was searching for Al Roker but encountered Melvin instead.

He faces hate crime charges including burglary, a felony, and menacing, a misdemeanor, related to the incident. Truelove had previously pleaded guilty to a criminal mischief charge in May 2026 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with six years suspended, followed by 10 years on probation.

Following the breach, the "Today" show announced it was reviewing security protocols. A security guard who reportedly failed to prevent Truelove from entering the unauthorized area was fired.

Craig Melvin addressed the incident, stating, "I've heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I'm doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out. I'm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on [TODAY Show]."
