United States President Donald Trump has once again refrained from launching a major attack against Iran, citing requests from Iran and other regional countries after the "perimeters of a deal" were agreed upon. He announced the decision early Sunday, August 2nd, 2026, stating on social media that the potential agreement would include the "Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat."

Despite this development, no breakthrough has been achieved regarding the management of maritime traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The Fars news agency, affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported that numerous ships were stuck in the northern corridor of the waterway within Iranian waters as of Sunday noon and could only pass with permission from Iran’s armed forces. Iranian authorities also indicated that similar control applies to a southern sea corridor passing through Oman’s territorial waters.

Iran’s acting Defence Minister, Majid Ebn-e-Reza, described Trump’s decision to pull back as part of "psychological operations and a war of calculations."

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Trump by phone before the announcement, emphasizing the importance of dialogue to reduce escalation and promote calm, according to Saudi state media.

Meanwhile, Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei—who succeeded his father Ali Khamenei after his death during the initial phase of the conflict—has not made any public appearances amid the ongoing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media warned that even if a voice message from Khamenei were released, adversaries could extract sensitive information about his location.

Additionally, state media showed President Masoud Pezeshkian making a phone call during a meeting with heads of state-run universities to address delayed payments to university professors and faculty staff.

The situation remains uncertain as diplomatic efforts continue without a clear resolution to the control and security of the Strait of Hormuz.
