Marcy Kaptur, the 80-year-old Democratic US representative for Ohio’s ninth congressional district, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after a car crash in Toledo, Ohio, on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026. Kaptur was a passenger in the vehicle and was on her way to church at the time of the incident.

Toledo police responded to a two-vehicle crash shortly before 11 a.m. local time and described the incident as a hit-and-run. Multiple outlets reported that Kaptur was taken to the hospital following the collision.

Kaptur’s office released a statement confirming she is “active, alert, and being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.” She has served in the US House of Representatives for 43 years and is the longest-serving female lawmaker in the chamber’s history. Her district covers parts of Toledo and stretches across northwestern Ohio along the southern shore of Lake Erie.

Born in Toledo, Kaptur previously worked in urban planning and advised Jimmy Carter’s administration before her election to Congress.
