Sediment flows into the sea through the vast network of rivers that empty into it. The sediment tints the water tan near the mouth of the river and green as the dirt diffuses through the water. In this image, sediment clouds the Sea of Azov in the upper right corner of the image. Two powerful rivers, the Don and the Kuban, flow into the shallow sea, depositing silt in the waters. Sediment is not the only thing that flows into the Black Sea on river water. Some of Europe’ largest rivers also deposit fertilizer from agricultural run-off in the Black Sea, and that feeds frequent phytoplankton blooms. Phytoplankton are microscopic plants that can be seen from space when large colonies grow in one place. Most of the agricultural run-off enters the Sea through the Danube River, the bright green area on the upper left side of the Sea. The water around the river’s mouths is tinted dark green, probably from the growth of surface phytoplankton. The phytoplankton blooms are a problem because their growth and decay can consume all of the available oxygen in a region, creating dead zones where fish cannot live. A drone struck a crowded beach near the village of Arkhipo-Osipovka on the Black Sea in southern Russia on Monday, August 3rd, 2026, killing seven people including three children and injuring 40 others. The governor of the Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratyev, reported that 17 of the injured were hospitalized.
Social media footage verified by the BBC showed the drone hurtling toward a cliffside before crashing into a fireball on the beach as tourists watched from the shore and water. Eyewitnesses quoted by Russian media described hearing gunfire, "like a machine gun," before the explosion, suggesting air defenses may have attempted to shoot down the drone. One holidaymaker said, "We covered ourselves with sun loungers, and didn't see where it exploded."
Some Ukrainian Telegram channels claimed the drone crashed due to electronic warfare jamming its signal.
In a related event on the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv killed at least nine people and injured dozens. The city's mayor said a residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district was partially destroyed, trapping people inside.
Witnesses expressed distress over the beach incident, with one stating, "This all happened in front of my children. My child is having a nervous breakdown."
