The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is searching for a new president who can bring a fresh mindset and drive change, according to an insider who spoke to the South China Morning Post. The current president and vice-chancellor, Xiang Zhang, has decided not to renew his contract when it expires in 2028 after serving two five-year terms.

The insider noted that someone who has spent a decade in the role may struggle to implement new initiatives, emphasizing the need for new blood as "this is a different world, different time." The successor will need to be proficient in using technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to manage the university effectively.

HKU is also considering participation in the Northern Metropolis megaproject, a Hong Kong government initiative to create a university town for talent in the New Territories. The insider highlighted the importance of marketing the university more effectively around innovation and its Nobel laureates to align with this ambition.

Zhang, a 62-year-old scientist, said last month that he "realised it is time for HKU to embrace fresh ideas and for a new leader to guide this great transformation."
