Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed spent the night before the August 4th, 2026 primary election at a pool party in Detroit with far-left streamer Hasan Piker. The event was hosted by a content creator and also attended by progressive House candidates Melat Kiros and Chris Rabb, both members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), according to The Associated Press.

Hasan Piker, who has roughly 10 million followers across social media, has appeared multiple times on the campaign trail with El-Sayed, raising questions about their ideological alignment. Piker has previously sparked controversy, including wearing an outfit resembling former communist dictator Mao Zedong and stating, "I never would and never will criticize Mao Zedong." He has also made contentious remarks such as claiming "America deserved 9/11" and commenting controversially on Hamas and the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

While El-Sayed has said he does not agree with all of Piker’s positions, he has faced criticism for not distancing himself from the streamer. Samantha Cantrell, NRSC Regional Press Secretary, told Fox News Digital, "Instead of spending his final hours campaigning with Michiganders, Abdul El-Sayed spent it poolside with an antisemite and terrorist sympathizer who believes America deserved 9/11."

The event and El-Sayed’s association with Piker have drawn pushback from both his primary opponent and Republican opposition, with some expressing discomfort over the presence of figures citing allegiance to Mao and extreme politics entering Michigan.
