Cameron Smith, the Australian golfer and former World No. 2, has stated he would "100 per cent" return to the PGA Tour if LIV Golf does not survive. Speaking ahead of the LIV Golf New York event in early August 2026, Smith said, "I mean, if it was the only option, I think that's where everyone would want to be for sure, 100 per cent."

Despite this, Smith emphasized his preference for LIV Golf to continue, highlighting the strong team dynamics and the positive impact the league has had on golf in Australia. "The team that we've got, I feel like we make each other better, better people and better golfers as well," he said. He also noted the importance of LIV Golf's contributions to junior golf and community events such as the Little Rippers.

Smith signed with LIV Golf in 2022 under a contract reportedly worth $US140 million ($198.72 million). However, the league faces financial challenges after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund announced in April 2026 that it would not continue its financial support beyond this season.

There are reports suggesting the LIV Golf Team Championship, scheduled for August 27 to 30, 2026, at The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort in Plymouth, Michigan, may be cancelled due to these troubles. Nonetheless, players have been instructed to prepare as if the event will proceed, and Smith expressed hope to return to the venue, saying, "We had a great year there last year in Detroit, and we're hoping we get back there."

However, Front Office Sports reported that The Cardinal currently lacks tournament infrastructure and fan hospitality arrangements.

Smith reflected on the progress made over the past few years, stating, "It would be a shame for all that to go away, and I feel like we've worked really hard over the last three or four years to kind of make that all happen." He concluded with, "Yeah, I'd hate to see it go away. We'll see what happens."
