Thousands of Palestinians gathered in Gaza City on Tuesday, August 4th, 2026, to hold a mass funeral for 112 members of the Abu Sharia and al-Hasayna families. Their remains were recovered from the rubble of homes destroyed during an Israeli attack in the Sabra neighborhood in November 2023.
According to Palestinian officials, the attack on November 22, 2023, killed 308 members of the two families, including 40 children, 30 women, and seven people with disabilities. Many bodies remained trapped beneath the rubble for nearly three years before being recovered.
The funeral was one of the largest held in Gaza since the war began and prompted widespread grief among Palestinian researchers, activists, and human rights advocates. They said the event symbolized the ongoing suffering of families still waiting to recover loved ones buried beneath the rubble.
Activist Ali Abo Rezeq remarked that the procession turned “massacre statistics into coffins and shrouds,” noting that some families had to search through the rubble with their bare hands due to shortages of heavy equipment.
Ramy Abdu, chairman of the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, stated that around 200 members of the Abu Sharia family are still believed to be beneath the rubble, and their remains may have decomposed.
The mass funeral underscores the lasting impact of the 2023 Sabra attack and the continuing humanitarian challenges in Gaza.
