Former special counsel Jack Smith has been invited to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) announced Monday.

Grassley posted on the social platform X that "American people deserve nothing less than full transparency and accountability for Arctic Frost and special counsel lawfare." The "Arctic Frost" probe, led by Smith, focuses on attempts to overturn the 2020 election and reportedly sought phone records of 10 GOP senators and at least one member of the House.

In mid-July, Grassley said he was notified by the Department of Justice that Smith's team had "secretly obtained" lawmakers' text messages as part of an investigation into former President Donald Trump. According to Grassley, he was among 44 lawmakers whose communications with White House staff were reviewed amid investigations into Trump's alleged role in the January 6 Capitol riot and classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago.

Smith previously oversaw cases related to these matters that were later dropped following Trump's 2024 election victory. In January 2026, Smith defended his prosecutorial efforts before the House Judiciary Committee, maintaining that evidence gathered by his team showed Trump had engaged in criminal activity.
