The race for Virginia’s Senate seat has finally taken shape following months of delay due to redistricting. Bert Mizusawa clinched the Republican nomination, setting up a three-way contest against longtime incumbent Sen. Mark Warner (D) and independent candidate Mark Moran.

Mizusawa, a former Major General in the military, won the Republican nomination over two other contenders. Despite never holding public office, Mizusawa has previously run unsuccessful campaigns for the House and Senate over the past 16 years. His nomination marks a significant challenge in a state that has not elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate in over two decades.

Sen. Mark Warner remains a formidable opponent, having won his last election by approximately 12 points. He also holds a powerful position on the Senate Intelligence Committee. The race, however, is not currently considered a top Republican target for flipping.

Independent candidate Mark Moran, who was fined over $6,000 after refusing to settle a deal with Kalshi, acknowledged the attention his campaign receives. Moran stated, "I know that they're going to come after me when I place a bet on myself. So I do that knowing that for the low price of about $100, I can get more attention on me, as evidenced by your calling me, than anything else that I could do with my ideas as a politician."

The race highlights ongoing challenges in American politics, with one observer noting, "Because we don't live in a constitutional republic where ideas can win. We live in one owned by the donor class."
