Taiwan commenced its annual Han Kuang war games on Wednesday, August 4th, 2026, marking the first time the island is testing its ability to counter a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) maritime blockade in the western Pacific during the 10-day exercise. This 42nd edition of the Han Kuang drill, Taiwan’s largest annual military exercise, integrates US military planning methods to enhance coordination and mission command.

According to Taiwan’s defence ministry, the exercise will also evaluate the wartime relocation of weapons production lines to safer locations, aiming to bolster the island’s capacity to sustain military operations under attack. The scenario for this year assumes the PLA has completed preparations for an attack and begun crossing the Taiwan Strait.

The drills come amid increased military pressure from Beijing, including grey-zone operations, large-scale exercises, and expanded coastguard patrols around Taiwan. These developments have raised concerns that any future conflict might start with a blockade rather than an immediate amphibious assault.

Taiwan’s armed forces plan to respond by raising combat readiness, conducting counter-landing operations, escorting convoys carrying critical supplies, and executing joint counter-blockade missions.
