On Tuesday, August 4th, 2026, messaging app Telegram was briefly removed from Apple’s App Store worldwide after Apple reported that a Telegram user had shared child sexual abuse material, violating Apple’s content guidelines.

Apple stated that its review found the content violated guidelines prohibiting such material. The app was removed from availability to approximately a billion users as a result. However, Telegram promptly removed the offending content and banned the user responsible.

Following these actions, the app was reinstated on the same day. A Telegram spokesperson confirmed, “The app was subsequently restored after the developer promptly removed the content and banned the user who posted it.”

This incident echoes a similar event in 2018 when Apple temporarily pulled Telegram for inappropriate content, which Telegram’s founder Pavel Durov addressed by enhancing safeguards before the app was restored.

Apple’s suspension highlights ongoing challenges in moderating content on large platforms, while Telegram’s quick response facilitated the app’s rapid reinstatement.
