President Donald Trump's administration announced on Tuesday, August 4th, 2026, the outcomes of a crackdown on illegal immigration within the trucking industry. The Department of Transportation (DOT) initiated the effort, named Operation Highway Shield, earlier this year in Florida and has since expanded it to Midwest states including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio.

During the operation, officials conducted 3,487 enforcement stops. These resulted in 766 unsafe commercial vehicles or drivers being placed out of service, 51 immigration detentions, 47 criminal charges filed, 39 incarcerations, 36 violations related to English Language Proficiency (ELP), and three cargo theft recoveries valued at approximately $1 million in stolen freight.

Florida Troopers reported that up to half of truckers at some weigh stations failed to meet English proficiency requirements. Master Trooper Craig Lents commented, "I try to concentrate on the [signs] they have to read," noting the challenge drivers face when traveling at high speeds and needing to quickly interpret road signs.

Derek Barrs, Federal Motor Carrier Safety administrator, emphasized that English proficiency requirements have been law for a long time. The enforcement initiative follows a series of deadly crashes nationwide involving drivers the Department of Homeland Security claims were in the U.S. illegally or held commercial drivers' licenses they should not have had.
