The US Army is collaborating with defense AI company EdgeRunner AI to develop an artificial intelligence "brain" for military robots. This onboard AI system allows robots to think, understand their environment, and continue missions even after losing contact with human operators, eliminating reliance on cloud computing or internet connections such as Starlink.

EdgeRunner AI Founder and CEO Tyler Saltsman described robots as "the next frontier of AI," comparing them to advanced edge devices like cell phones or laptops but equipped with neural networks that provide context during missions to assist warfighters.

Saltsman emphasized the importance of the US maintaining its lead in the global AI race, noting that while it is debatable whether China is ahead, if so, it is only by a small margin. He called China's dominance in drone manufacturing "problematic."

Highlighting a limitation of current AI, Saltsman said today's systems are "too generalized," which motivates his company to develop technology tailored for specific military missions. He explained that robots need mission-specific intelligence to make better decisions in the heat of battle, thereby increasing the probability of mission success.

This partnership with the Army Research Laboratory reflects a strategic effort to advance autonomous military capabilities amid intensifying innovation competition with major US adversaries.
