A cat named Toast survived a severe fire that destroyed the North Union Apartments, a five-level complex in Midvale, a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah. The fire began around 8 a.m. on Friday, August 1st, 2026, and was likely caused by a mechanical issue. It took firefighters over 60 hours to fully extinguish the four-alarm blaze, which displaced more than 40 families.
Toast was living in one of the 220 occupied units when the fire broke out. His owners initially feared they had lost him, according to a social media post from Salt Lake County Animal Services, which was assisting pets affected by the fire. However, Salt Lake’s Unified Fire Authority reported on Monday night, August 4th, that firefighters found Toast alive inside the apartment complex more than 72 hours after the fire started.
The resilient cat had sheltered inside a closet—one of the few parts of the apartment left standing after the roof collapsed—surviving days of smoke, water sprayed by firefighters, and the surrounding destruction. Meanwhile, displaced families were temporarily housed in Airbnb homes through a partnership between the rental company and the United Way of Salt Lake, though many tenants remained uncertain about their future.
Toast’s survival has drawn attention across news and social media, symbolizing a rare positive story amid the tragedy.
