An 18-year-old student surnamed Yang from Ningbo, Zhejiang province, eastern China, experienced temporary hearing loss after being exposed to intense cicada noise for several hours during a camping trip in early July.
According to Shandian News, Yang camped in a forest where the cicada chorus produced noise levels that can peak above 85 decibels, the threshold at which permanent hearing impairment can begin. Without any soundproofing equipment, he endured the droning for about four hours.
By evening, Yang felt fullness and swelling in his ears and had difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds such as birdsong and mobile phone alerts. Medical diagnosis confirmed temporary hearing impairment caused by noise exposure.
After receiving treatment and avoiding noise for 14 days, Yang's hearing returned to normal.
This incident attracted significant attention on social media, amassing 4.5 million views, as many people had believed natural sounds like cicadas were harmless to hearing.
