Jetstar announced that from February 2, 2027, passengers holding the airline's lowest fare tickets will only be allowed to bring one small bag that fits under the seat for free. Those wishing to store a cabin bag in the overhead locker will face fees starting at $25 for domestic flights and up to $52 on some international routes. For example, a family of four flying return between Cairns and Tokyo could incur an additional $416 in charges.

Jetstar stated these changes aim to speed up boarding, improve access to overhead lockers, and help flights depart on time. The airline also noted that this policy mirrors practices of many of the world's largest low-cost airlines.

However, consumer group Choice criticized the move as part of a trend where airlines charge extra for services previously included in ticket prices. Choice spokesman Andy Kelly said, "Travellers are getting increasingly sick of being nickelled and dimed by airlines."

Aviation consultant and Griffith University adjunct industry fellow Justin Wastnage highlighted that Australia represents a very different market compared to other countries where such policies are common. Meanwhile, travel agent Lynton Jones from The Savvy Traveller suggested that while removing the need to weigh cabin bags at the gate might reduce passenger stress, he was skeptical it would significantly speed up boarding.

Jetstar also remarked that it is not directly competing with other low-cost domestic carriers and that the decision reflects what the airline believes consumers will accept.

The changes have sparked discussion about whether unbundling fees actually make budget travel more expensive, with some noting that flying with full-service carriers might now be cheaper for travelers needing baggage, guaranteed seats, or onward connections.
