President Donald Trump’s attorney filed an emergency motion on Wednesday, August 5th, 2026, seeking to block the BBC from accessing financial records linked to his trust. The motion comes after a judge granted the British broadcaster permission late last month to investigate Trump’s financial documents following claims of losses related to a BBC “Panorama” series episode titled "Trump: A Second Chance?"

The BBC’s documentary included footage that combined three separate parts of a Trump speech, making it appear as though he encouraged a violent attack on the Capitol. Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito, criticized the scope of the BBC’s subpoena, stating it demands confidential tax, ownership, and financial records for approximately 400 entities connected to Trump’s trust. Brito warned that once these records are handed over, the disclosure cannot be undone, even if objections are pending.

If the emergency motion is denied, the BBC would gain insight into Trump’s cryptocurrency and stock profits, as well as business transactions from at least 400 entities and companies tied to his personal assets managed by family members.

Judge Enjoliqué Aytch Lett authorized the subpoena, requiring the trust to begin producing documents by Thursday, August 6th. Meanwhile, the BBC has apologized for the documentary’s editing but has strongly opposed Trump’s lawsuit seeking damages. The broadcaster argues that U.S. courts lack jurisdiction over the foreign corporation.

Trump has continued to resist, recently requesting that District Judge Roy Altman allow modifications to the lawsuit to protect his financial documents from being reviewed by the BBC.
