WASHINGTON — The United States participated in a coordinated currency intervention with Japan aimed at preventing yen weakness from triggering instability across Asian currencies, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Nikkei Asia in an exclusive interview on Tuesday, August 5, 2026.

Bessent referenced the Asian financial crisis of the 1990s as a key lesson guiding Washington's decision to join the yen-buying operation. This intervention was intended to contain risks spreading through the region's financial markets.

The interview marked Nikkei's second exclusive opportunity to speak with Treasury Secretary Bessent, who had previously spoken to the publication in August 2025. (Photo by Kosuke Takami)
