Kidnapping for ransom by armed groups and bandits remains a major crisis in Nigeria. On Wednesday, August 5th, 2026, the Nigerian government announced the successful rescue of more than 300 people who had been kidnapped across the country in an intelligence and security operation.

Bayo Onanuga, a special adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said in a statement, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu warmly welcomes the successful rescue of 308 Nigerian citizens who were abducted in different attacks in Niger and Kwara states.”

The statement detailed that 163 of those rescued were abducted from the Woro Community in Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State, while 145 were taken from Niger State.

The crisis has been exacerbated by attacks from armed groups, including Boko Haram-linked fighters. According to the Nigeria-based Punch website, at least 200 people were killed in a recent coordinated assault by suspected Boko Haram-linked fighters that lasted several hours.

In June 2026, President Tinubu announced that the military had “neutralised” more than 13,000 terrorists in the past year. The Nigerian army also reported rescuing 360 people abducted by Boko Haram, which has spread across parts of the country from Borno State, once considered the center of its operations.

The ongoing security challenges highlight the difficulties Nigeria faces in protecting its citizens and stabilizing affected regions.
