The subpoena initiates an official investigation into whether Fauci personally profited from awards, professional opportunities, financial incentives, grants, and Covid-19 guidance that impacted Florida businesses and consumers.

Uthmeier alleged that Fauci's diary entries, revealed in documents obtained by Senator Rand Paul, focused more on self-promotion than on legitimate safety concerns regarding mRNA vaccines. He claimed Fauci was pursuing book deals, awards, and financial gain while Floridians were allegedly harmed by his misrepresentations. The entries reportedly detail substantial awards linked to Fauci's public recommendations as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases that affected Florida.

The attorneys general emphasized that while government officials have a degree of immunity in their official capacities, personal profit from official guidance could violate Florida law. This subpoena follows renewed scrutiny of Fauci by some lawmakers on Capitol Hill concerning his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. At a recent Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing, Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment to avoid answering questions from Republicans.

Notably, President Joe Biden issued a pre-emptive pardon for Fauci just before leaving office in January 2025.
