Uthmeier alleged that Fauci’s diary entries revealed a focus on self-promotion, including pursuing book deals, awards, and other financial benefits, which he claims came at the expense of Floridians who were "deceived and harmed by his misrepresentations." The entries reportedly detail substantial awards linked to Fauci’s public recommendations as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The attorneys general emphasized that while government officials have a level of immunity in their official capacities, personal profit from official guidance could violate Florida law. This subpoena follows renewed scrutiny of Fauci by some lawmakers on Capitol Hill regarding his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Notably, Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment during a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing to avoid answering questions from Republicans.
