Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney for the District of Columbia, after her office challenged his claims that vandals damaged the recently renovated Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool.

Speaking to NBC News on Thursday, Trump said, “There was tremendous vandalism. So, she made a terrible mistake.” When asked if he would consider replacing Pirro, he responded, “I think she made a terrible decision.”

Pirro, a former Fox News host and longtime Trump ally whom he appointed as the top prosecutor for the nation’s capital, moved on Friday to dismiss vandalism charges against a former Olympian and three others connected to incidents at the reflecting pool. In a 20-page court filing, her office stated the damage to the concrete-bottomed tourist site was due to a “botched” renovation, not vandalism.

The dispute followed a reportedly heated Oval Office meeting on Monday involving Trump, Pirro, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. According to the New York Times, Pirro accused Burgum of misleading the president about the rushed renovation by a vendor awarded a no-bid contract from the Interior Department.

Earlier in the week, Trump accused Pirro of having “folded like an umbrella” after the Justice Department dismissed the case against David Hearn, a former Olympic canoeist charged with felony property destruction. Hearn faced up to 10 years in prison and a $1,000 fine for touching a peeled section of the pool’s coating.

Following the dismissal, Hearn’s lawyers stated the case should never have been brought and argued that its dismissal “does not erase the abuse of government power in arresting and charging a patriotic American who did nothing wrong.”

Hearn was one of seven individuals charged in connection with what Trump described as attempts to vandalize the $15 million renovation of the reflecting pool, which the Justice Department said suffered from “flawed installation by the contractor.”
