An Australian aviation crew executed a groundbreaking midwinter medical evacuation from McMurdo Station in Antarctica on Friday, July 31, 2026. The mission involved flying in total darkness and temperatures as low as -43°C (-45.4°F).
The operation was launched after an urgent request for medical assistance from the US research station on Ross Island. Skytraders, the aviation company responsible, reported that after an initial weather-related delay, their Airbus A319 successfully landed under extremely challenging conditions.
The patient was safely transferred onto the plane, known as Snowbird 1, which then flew to Christchurch, New Zealand, where medical treatment was provided.
Captain Louise Robertson, one of four pilots on the flight departing from Hobart, Tasmania, told the BBC that this was the first such evacuation to occur in July and to be completed entirely in darkness. "We completed it on the 31 July, and the first day of any sort of sunlight, which was very minimal, would be on the 1 August," she said.
Her husband, Rod Robertson, piloted the landing at McMurdo Station. "He was in the left seat and I was in the right seat," she added, describing the mission as the most complex she had encountered in her 25 years as a pilot and seven years with Skytraders.
Captain Al Wallach, another pilot on the mission, highlighted the specialized expertise required, praising the coordinated efforts of flight crews, meteorologists, operational planners, runway teams, and medical personnel. He noted, "Every Antarctic mission demands absolute precision, but winter operations raise the complexity significantly. The conditions we encountered were right on the edge of even the most specialised aircraft capability."
The plane had to be specially configured with a stretcher by engineers and a design team over 24 hours, and takeoff was delayed an additional 12 hours while waiting for a suitable weather window. Ground crews at the station also faced a six-hour task grading and grooming the compacted snow runway amid a storm before the plane could land.
This mission represents a significant achievement in Antarctic aviation and emergency response capabilities.
