The US economy unexpectedly lost 23,000 jobs in July 2026, according to data released on Friday, August 7th, by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This decline challenges US President Donald Trump’s assertions of leading a robust economic revival as his Republican Party prepares for critical midterm elections in November.

Despite the job losses, the unemployment rate in the United States ticked down slightly to 4.1 percent. Employment decreases were noted in the local government education and retail trade sectors, while the healthcare sector continued to see job growth, the BLS said in a statement.

Since beginning his second term, President Trump has implemented policies aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and controlling inflation. However, the unexpected job losses present a potential vulnerability in the labor market, a key issue for Democrats seeking to regain control of both houses of Congress.

The July employment data also poses a challenge for the US Federal Reserve, which has indicated it may raise interest rates later this year.
