On Saturday, August 8, 2026, Dutch rider Demi Vollering secured a dramatic victory in the eighth stage of the Tour de France Femmes, a 171.9-km mountain route from Sisteron to Nice. This win allowed her to seize the yellow jersey from Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney and take the overall lead with only one stage remaining.

The stage was notably affected before it began when defending champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot of Visma-Lease a Bike withdrew due to illness. On the course, Vollering made a decisive move on the steep Chemin de l'Arieta climb with six kilometres left, breaking away from Niewiadoma-Phinney and Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini. She then extended her lead during the descent into Nice.

This victory marked a swift comeback for Vollering, who had lost one minute and 16 seconds to Niewiadoma-Phinney on Mont Ventoux the previous day. The win also gave Vollering her fifth spell in the yellow jersey, making her the fifth different rider to lead the 2026 race.

Elisa Longo Borghini of UAE Team ADQ finished second after narrowly beating Niewiadoma-Phinney in a sprint, with the Polish rider finishing third and relinquishing the race lead.

After the stage, Niewiadoma-Phinney expressed frustration and criticized the tactics of Vollering's team, FDJ United-Suez, accusing them of unfair blocking. Vollering responded with a focus on resilience, stating, "In a stage race, you live day-by-day. So you can be disappointed tonight, but then the next morning you need to put on a new mask and you go again. You try again, you make a plan with the team."

Looking ahead, Vollering acknowledged the challenge of the final stage: "Tomorrow is going to be super hard, of course. It's what I said since the beginning of the Tour: still, everything can happen on the last day, but at least I start in yellow tomorrow. And that's already a dream coming true."
