The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally officially began on August 8, 2026, attracting approximately 500,000 riders to the small town of Sturgis, South Dakota, and the surrounding Black Hills region. Known as the world’s largest motorcycle rally, this 10-day event transforms the town of 7,100 residents into a bustling hub filled with motorcycles, races, concerts, group rides, stunt shows, and vendor exhibitions.

Country star Lainey Wilson is the headliner for this year’s rally, scheduled to perform on August 12. Other notable performers include YUNGBLUD, Megadeth, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rob Zombie, and Insane Clown Posse.

The rally traces its origins back to 1938 when Indian dealer Pappy Hoel founded the event. Hoel’s marketing skills, passion for motorcycle racing, and his paternal care for America’s World War II veterans, many of whom struggled with combat-related mental wounds, helped make Sturgis synonymous with motorcycles. The Hoel family managed the rally for nearly 50 years before handing it over to the City of Sturgis in the 1980s.

This year also features the debut of the Indian Chief Vintage Sturgis SD Edition, a new motorcycle model inspired partly by the post-war history of the rally. It showcases a classic two-tone Indian Motorcycle Red and Cream paint scheme with a multicolored Indian Motorcycle headdress logo, celebrating Indian’s historic connection to the event.

Pappy Hoel is often credited as “the man who put the brotherhood in motorcycles” and is regarded as the reason so many people continue to attend the rally today.
