TOKYO — China’s ongoing criticism of Japan continues to strain diplomatic, security, and trade relations between the two countries. This Japan-bashing is viewed as part of a broader strategy aimed at weakening the foundations of the US-led order in Asia.

The tensions escalated following remarks about Taiwan by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, which provoked a strong response from the Chinese government under leader Xi Jinping. Analysts suggest that China’s pushback may also be indirectly targeting Washington’s influence in the region.
