Gibson Nash, 21, has been charged with first-degree murder after his mother, Margaret Chu Dufour, a 56-year-old nurse, was found beaten and strangled inside her home in Polk County, Florida.

Authorities with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office discovered Dufour's body following a series of troubling events on the morning of July 21, 2026. Just before 7 a.m., Nash was involved in multiple traffic crashes while driving his mother’s blue BMW SUV, according to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

Sheriff Judd described the situation as puzzling, noting the severity of the crash and questioning why Nash was unconscious. A paramedic observed blood on Nash’s hands and questioned its origin, stating, "He's got blood on his hands, and the paramedic thinks this is not a bloody kind of crash. Where did the blood come from?"

About a month prior, deputies had responded to a disturbance at the home related to a moving company, with Sheriff Judd stating, "The movers tried to upcharge her and charge her more money."

Dufour had recently bonded Nash out of jail and relocated to Florida to obtain mental health assistance for him despite his repeated arrests, including for threatening her. Deputies entered the house with a key found on the front porch and found Dufour’s bloodied body.

Nash now faces first-degree murder charges in Polk County. The case highlights a tragic outcome despite efforts to support mental health and rehabilitation.
