Israel has taken delivery of its most advanced and expensive submarine, the INS Drakon, from Germany, marking a significant expansion of its naval fleet amid escalating threats in the region. The handover, reported by The Algemeiner, is expected to substantially boost Israel's underwater strike and reconnaissance capabilities.

The INS Drakon, part of the Dolphin AIP class, was named during a 2024 ceremony in Kiel, Germany. It is equipped with unique and groundbreaking systems that enhance the range of the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) operational capabilities across multiple arenas. Measuring over 70 meters (230 feet) in length and displacing more than 2,000 tons, the vessel is the largest submarine constructed in Germany since World War II and carries an estimated price tag of $634 million.

Built specifically for the Israeli Navy by Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), the submarine is designed to provide a critical sea-based layer of deterrence and retribution amid ongoing conflict with Iran, according to defense analysts.

Ehud Eilam, an Israeli national security expert and former researcher for Israel’s Ministry of Defense, told Fox News Digital that maintaining a continuous undersea presence is vital for Israel's national survival. He emphasized that some submarines must remain at sea on high alert around the clock to respond if Iran were to launch an attack capable of crippling the IDF, including its strategic capabilities. Eilam noted, "Israel’s new submarine is bigger than others, which suggests Israel wants to have more options, such as increasing the range of the submarine's missiles so they can reach every target in Iran, even if the Israeli submarine is in the Mediterranean Sea."

The submarine's name, INS Drakon (Dragon), symbolizes strength, uniqueness, and power. It was chosen because it contains the Hebrew letters ד׳, ק׳, ר׳ (Dakar), commemorating the legacy of the submarine INS Dakar and its crew, the Israeli Ministry of Defense said.

Israel highlighted the importance of always having submarines at sea, noting that other submarines might be in Haifa harbor and vulnerable to attack, underscoring the strategic necessity of continuous undersea readiness.

"Everything is going according to plan with the new program for Israel," officials stated, reinforcing confidence in the submarine's role in national defense.
