This decline aligns with the implementation of Mamdani’s “containerization” program, which introduces new trash bins across boroughs to better manage waste and limit rodent access.

Despite the city’s estimated rat population of one rat for every three residents, the long-standing battle against these rodents appears to be entering a phase of uneasy detente. It remains unclear whether the reduction in sightings reflects a true decrease in rat numbers or an adaptation by the rodents to changing urban conditions, with some neighborhoods reporting fewer visible encounters.

The city’s efforts to control its vermin population through improved waste management strategies highlight ongoing challenges in urban pest control.
