Washington, D.C. hosted the largest fireworks display in history on July 4, 2026, as part of the Freedom 250 celebration marking America's 250th birthday. The event featured 840,537 fireworks, officially confirmed by Guinness World Records this week. The display was organized by Freedom 250 and Pyrotecnico, Inc., with Event Strategies Inc coordinating the event.

Despite weather-related delays that led to evacuations from the National Mall, hundreds of thousands of spectators witnessed the fireworks show that lasted about 40 minutes and was launched from multiple sites due to its scale, according to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.

President Donald Trump, who delivered a speech at the celebration, estimated the crowd size on the National Mall was reduced from 350,000 to 150,000 due to the weather. The fireworks were set off over the Washington Monument.

The previous record for the largest fireworks display was held by a megachurch's 2016 New Year's Eve show, which featured 810,904 fireworks.

The White House praised the event, stating, "No other president in history could have accomplished the incredible feat that President Trump did at our Nation’s historic 250th birthday celebration, which included an incredible air show, a record-breaking fireworks display, and an inspiring speech delivered before hundreds of thousands of American patriots," as reported by The Washington Post.

The celebrations also included speeches at national landmarks, a gathering of military veterans including a 103-year-old World War II veteran, and an international naval review in New York Harbor.
