Wildfires in British Columbia, Canada, have intensified significantly, with the BC Wildfire Service reporting 102 active blazes by Sunday morning, August 9th, 2026—up from 70 the previous day. Nearly half of these fires remain out of control amid continuous hot and dry conditions that have led to "extreme fire behavior," according to the service. Response efforts are challenged by "elevated fire behavior coupled with severely poor visibility."

The Bald Range fire, which rapidly expanded on Saturday, has engulfed the Summerland area, home to approximately 12,000 residents, consuming nearly 10,341 hectares (25,552 acres) by early Sunday.

Authorities have initiated evacuations, including airlifting more than 50 people from the community of Faulder. In total, over 20,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes. British Columbia Premier David Eby emphasized the unpredictable and dangerous nature of the fires, stating, "air evacuations are underway for people who remain isolated behind the fire perimeter." He added, "To everyone affected, you are not facing this alone, the entire province is with you."

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating a possible fatality related to the fires, though officials have not yet released casualty or damage figures or a list of missing persons.

The situation remains critical as firefighting efforts continue under challenging conditions.
