Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for the US Senate in Michigan, has embraced former President Donald Trump’s characterization that they represent “VERY DIFFERENT” versions of America. El-Sayed, an epidemiologist who won the Democratic primary in early August 2026, is preparing for a competitive general election against Republican former US representative Mike Rogers.

On Saturday night, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform a side-by-side image of himself and First Lady Melania Trump alongside El-Sayed and his wife, Sarah Jukaku, who wears a hijab. The caption read, “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s.” When asked about the post on Sunday, El-Sayed told CNN, “Yeah, he’s right.”

El-Sayed elaborated, contrasting two visions: one where “your overlords are two people who don’t like each other, but join in the interest of making billions of dollars off of you,” and another where people genuinely love each other and want to build an America where families can thrive. “Donald Trump’s vision is the one you’re living in right now,” he said.

During a speech on Thursday, Trump called El-Sayed a communist and said he was “full of shit,” remarks that were met with loud cheers.

El-Sayed, who ran to the left of his primary opponent but is not a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has described himself as a capitalist seeking to improve capitalism. He also acknowledged that opponents might try to paint him negatively based on his name but emphasized America’s long history of embracing diversity. “America is a lot bigger than very small people like Donald Trump or [Vice President] JD Vance or Mike Rogers want to make it out to be,” he said.

Michigan has been a swing state in recent elections, backing Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, Donald Trump in 2016, Joe Biden in 2020, and returning to Trump in 2024.

El-Sayed’s primary win and his stance set the stage for a bruising Senate race in this key battleground state.
