Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the progressive congresswoman from New York, has announced her decision to freeze her eggs and will be sharing the entire process online. The 36-year-old revealed this choice in a series of Instagram stories over the weekend, stating, “This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life.”

Ocasio-Cortez explained that she had been saving for the procedure for a long time and noted the lack of accessible information for women interested in fertility preservation. She emphasized the broader issue, saying, “As women in general, we are not taught about our bodies, we are not prepared for our own lives, whether that is in puberty, whether that is in pregnancy, whether that is in perimenopause, menopause, whether that is in so many different aspects of our lives.”

Balancing her congressional duties with the treatment, Ocasio-Cortez shared that she would be administering her shots in the dressing room before a scheduled ABC interview on Sunday. She encouraged transparency and empowerment by saying, “I want you all to see that. Because women can do anything.”

The treatment involves injecting multiple medications over a period typically lasting around 10 days or more, and Ocasio-Cortez showed the medicines and tools used, including syringes and alcohol wipes.

She also criticized the current political environment, stating, “In this political environment where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy, I think it’s important for us as leaders to have these conversations and share these processes, especially for working women across the country and normalize them.”

Amanda Litman, co-founder and president of Run for Something, a political action committee supporting young progressive candidates, expressed gratitude for Ocasio-Cortez’s openness on X, saying, “I’m just so grateful for her honesty & vulnerability.”
