Florida House candidate Oliver Larkin (D) publicly challenged Democratic strategist James Carville’s remarks opposing the Democratic Party’s openness to progressive and democratic socialist candidates. Speaking on Fox News Sunday with Shannon Bream on August 9, 2026, Larkin called it “very foolhardy to be excluding people from the Democratic Party that they’re going to be begging for our votes in 2028.” He emphasized the need to build a "majoritarian coalition" to regain power in states like Florida and reclaim the House of Representatives.

Carville, known for his role in Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign, has been a vocal critic of left-wing candidates winning against incumbent mainstream Democrats. He described progressive and democratic socialists as “too hotheaded to know that they’re not popular” and referenced the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) platform, suggesting that most Democrats agree with his views.

Larkin also criticized Carville and pundit Van Jones for “missing something,” stating that “electoralism is about addition, not subtraction.” The discussion included mention of Larkin’s support from left-wing Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, who has campaigned for progressive candidates such as Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed (D). Carville has dismissed Piker, previously telling Fox News he would not remain part of the Democratic Party if Piker became a fixture.

In related commentary, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) remarked that Carville “has an opinion on everything” but pays attention to “almost one out of 10.” Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who caucuses with Democrats and ran as a Democrat in his 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns, also spoke to CNN recently.
