A Florida woman lost her arm in a frightening alligator attack on Saturday, August 10th, 2026, while swimming in the Silver River near Ocala. The woman was part of a group of swimmers when she noticed an alligator approaching and attempted to fend it off with a paddle. Instead, the alligator grabbed her right arm and dragged her underwater.

John Gamache, who was eating lunch on his boat nearby with his father, heard the commotion. He said, "I looked just upriver from us a couple hundred feet and saw an alligator head way above the water and going full speed towards the swimmers," according to FOX 35 Orlando.

After the alligator was scared away by Gamache's boat, he used a rope to tie off the woman's severed arm to control the bleeding. He described the injury as terrible, with "bones poking out, blood everywhere," emphasizing that "the minutes mattered."

Gamache, who has visited the Silver Springs area for decades without witnessing an alligator attack, later spoke with the woman's family. He said, "They called earlier, and we talked for a while, and it was heartwarming to hear them explain their emotions." He added, "We're glad that it happened as good as it could have. Like the result is just the sustained injury and nothing more."

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the woman and others were kneeling in roughly three feet of water when the alligator attacked and bit both of her arms.

This incident highlights the dangers of wildlife encounters in Florida's waterways. Earlier this year, Braden Peters allegedly livestreamed himself shooting a dead alligator in the Francis Taylor Everglades Wildlife Management Area, underscoring ongoing tensions around alligator interactions in the state.
