Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist, has surged ahead in the final weeks of the chaotic Democratic primary to become Wisconsin’s next governor candidate. Her grassroots campaign has made her a frontrunner despite public skepticism from top Democrats and a last-minute campaign shake-up.

Hong has attracted significant attention online, with supporters in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood showing enthusiasm through campaign merchandise and events such as the 24-hour Riverwest bike race. Residents displayed Hong-themed coloring books, signs, and a DJ celebrated her campaign with music.

However, Hong faces criticism from major figures within her own party who question her ability to win a general election. Former Wisconsin governor Tom Tiffany, whom Hong aims to succeed, launched a late campaign blitz supporting one of her rivals. Tiffany was also noted by Ben Wikler, former chair of the Wisconsin Democratic party, as having been part of a plot to overturn the 2020 presidential election results, underscoring the high stakes of the governor’s seat.

Michael Wagner, director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s journalism school, highlighted the strategic challenge Democrats face in Wisconsin. While Republicans have increasingly nominated more major candidates, Democrats have traditionally believed that moderate candidates are necessary to win statewide in swing states like Wisconsin. Wagner noted, “Sometimes the party establishment can get too cute with what they worry about. But it’s not unreasonable that they’re worried, because in an election in Wisconsin, any one of 20 things could shift 10,000 votes, and that could be it.”

Independent voter Terrence Dahmen described the Democratic candidates as “young, enthusiastic, well-read and well-spoken,” reflecting a diverse and energetic field.

Hong’s campaign embodies a push against the status quo, with supporters and observers noting her pragmatic approach. Wagner remarked during the Riverwest 24 event, “This is how we get shit done. And that for me is what Francesca Hong brings.”

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has mocked Hong’s old tweets, adding to the contentious atmosphere surrounding the race.

The Democratic primary in Wisconsin remains highly competitive and closely watched, given its implications for both state governance and the broader national political landscape.
