TOKYO — Japanese technology group NEC has created a new department composed solely of artificial intelligence agents. This innovative move aims to improve productivity by clearly separating tasks performed by humans from those handled by AI.

In NEC's AI-only department, worker agents will be supervised by other AI agents in managerial roles, streamlining operations within the company.

This development occurs amid broader advancements in AI technology, including Japan's 'Sakana Fugu' multiagent AI, which performs well against competitors like Fable 5 and GPT 5.5. Meanwhile, Alibaba's Qwen AI model has been noted to fall short of claims positioning it as second only to Fable 5.

The initiative reflects a growing trend in the tech industry, with companies such as Hitachi employing AI agents throughout entire systems development processes and other regions, including China and the US, advancing AI applications across various sectors.
