KATHMANDU — Nepal’s government has compelled a significant Tibetan studies conference to be held online rather than in Kathmandu after China objected to the gathering. Beijing claimed the event would question its rule over Tibet, leading to the relocation of the meeting and sparking accusations of state interference in academic freedom.

The move comes amid ongoing sensitivities surrounding Tibet’s political status. Tibetan girls were recently seen performing next to a cutout of the Dalai Lama during a celebration of his 90th birthday at a refugee camp in Lalitpur, Nepal, on July 6, highlighting the region's cultural and political complexities.

This development underscores the influence of China’s stance on Tibet-related issues in neighboring countries like Nepal.
