A judge in Staten Island, New York, has temporarily blocked New York City Councilmember Zohran Mamdani’s (D) proposed tax on second homes valued at more than $5 million. The ruling, issued by Judge Wayne Ozzi, a Democrat on the state’s Supreme Court, also required the city to remove a public list containing over 900,000 properties.
The decision halts the rollout of the new tax policy aimed at high-value second homes, pending further legal review. The public list taken down was part of the city’s effort to identify properties subject to the tax.
This development marks a significant judicial check on the city’s taxation plan under Mamdani’s initiative.
