Canadian police charged Ali Assakereh, 54, on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, with making a bomb threat against the US consulate in Halifax. This incident marks the latest security concern involving American diplomatic posts in Canada following two shootings earlier this year at the US consulate in Toronto.
On Monday morning, several downtown streets in Halifax were evacuated after Halifax Regional Police discovered a car linked to Assakereh parked near the consulate. The vehicle contained a propane tank and containers believed to hold flammable liquids, according to police. An explosives expert later determined that the items posed no threat to public safety, leading to the lifting of the evacuation Monday afternoon.
Assakereh is scheduled to appear in provincial court on charges of uttering threats and public mischief. A spokesperson for the US embassy in Ottawa stated on Monday that US officials would not comment on the security matter while the police investigation was ongoing.
This case follows two shootings earlier this year at the US consulate in Toronto, Canada's largest city.
